Ordering repeat prescriptions

We have many ways to order your repeat medications :

  1. NHS App – please register for the App (the same one you use to access your covid vaccination information). You can use this to access and order your repeat prescriptions.
  2. Patient Access – This is a separate online ordering portal which can be used via an app on your phone or on any computer or tablet device. Once you are registered on the site you will be able to order your repeat medications from a list showing all your personal prescription items. www.patientaccess.com  You will need to have a new access code issued to you by the practice to register with Patient Access. To do this please telephone the surgery after 10 a.m., or ask via our online consultation service, reception will need to confirm your identity. You can also arrange to have proxy access to a relative’s record, in order to do this please send in a letter from your relative to confirm.
  3. You can post or drop in your request to the surgery, there is a box outside the front door on the wall.
  4. You can also use our new online consultation Service, this is accessible via the button below. Please ensure you give the name, strength and dose of medication you wish to order.

If you’re calling about a prescription query, we kindly ask you to call after 10:30 to help us keep the lines clear for unwell patients who need urgent care.

Order via AccuRx

It takes  5 working days to process your repeat prescription request.

We are unable to accept prescriptions more than 2 weeks before they are due as we cannot process these.

Urgent Prescription Policy

Please try to plan ahead if you can. We recognise that some urgent requests are genuine, but many could be avoided with a bit of forward planning

Due to an increasing number of requests for repeat prescriptions to be issued urgently, priority will only be given for prescriptions that cannot be missed;

  • eg diabetic medications
  • inhalers
  • angina sprays
  • epilepsy medication.

Most medications can safely be missed for a few days and you may be advised that your prescription will be issued routinely.

We will not issue urgent prescriptions for items that can be bought over the counter.

If your medication cannot be missed, the item will be issued as required and available to be collected not before 6.00pm.

Prescriptions Charges and Exemptions

Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).

The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines.  Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.

NHS charges

  • If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months, or more than 13 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC.
  • Telephone advice and order line 0300 330 1341
  • General Public – Buy or Renew a PPC On-line

There is further information about prescription exemptions and fees on the NHS website

Hormone Replacement Therapy Prepayment Certificate

There is now a new pre-payment certificate available for women on HRT therapy.

There are a few different ways to get the HRT Prescription Prepayment Certificate:

  • online on the NHSBSA website: nhsbsa.nhs.uk/hrt-ppc
  • in person at some pharmacies
  • if you’re deaf or hard of hearing, you can use the textphone (or minicom) to contact the NHSBSA using the text relay service. Dial 18001 then the relevant phone number. This will be available from 25 May 2023
  • the NHSBSA also offers a telephone translation service and can provide documents in large print or Braille on request

Patients can call 0300 330 2089 for help and support.

To use your HRT PPC, please ask us for your HRT items on a separate prescription to any other medicines you are prescribed (one prescription per item). This is to ensure the prescription can be processed correctly at the pharmacy.

Take your prescriptions and HRT PPC to a pharmacy and use it as many times as you need over 12 months.

If you have other medications it may be cheaper to get the general pre-payment certificate instead.

Medicine Cabinet

Below is a list of useful medicines and dressings. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions so you know how much medicine to take or to give to children, and how often to give it. If you’re not sure, get advice from your pharmacist, GP or Health Visitor.

Never give the medicine more often than recommended, and don’t give any more than the stated dose.

Keep all medicines locked-up and out of the reach of children.

Paracetamol: Good for headaches, colds, sore throats and painful bruises.

Paracetamol Mixture: For relief of pain or fever in young children.

Sedative Cough Linctus: For dry or painful coughs – but not coughs caused by common colds.

Menthol Crystals: Add to hot water to make steam inhalations for treating catarrh and dry or painful coughs.

Vapour Rub: Again, for steam inhalations. Also useful for children with stuffy noses or dry coughs. Rub on the chest and nose.

Antiseptic Solution: One teaspoon diluted in warm water for cleaning cuts and grazes.

Antiseptic Cream: For treating septic spots, sores in the nose and grazes.

Calamine Lotion: For dabbing (not rubbing) on insect bites and stings and sunburn.

Dressing Strips: For minor cuts.

3″ Wide Crepe Bandage: To keep dressings in place. To support sprained or bruised joints.

Gauze Squares: For cleaning cuts and grazes.

Thermometer: For fevers.

Pharmacy services

There is a new, same-day, GP Community Pharmacy Consultation Service to help you receive quality care and support for minor health conditions, more quickly through accessing care via your community pharmacist. This is for minor illnesses and injuries such as: ankle, foot, knee, lower leg or arm swelling or pain, athlete’s foot, allergic reactions, bites or stings, coughs and colds, eye infections, headaches, lower back pain, mouth ulcers and blisters, rashes, sore throats and shoulder pain.

Now, when you contact us regarding a minor condition, after discussing your conditions, where appropriate, Patient Services will offer you the option of having a same-day appointment with your Community Pharmacist.

Community Pharmacists are highly qualified and experienced in providing clinical advice and care (including recommending over the counter treatments) for minor injuries and conditions. They will offer you a same-day consultation via the phone, or in person, which can be arranged quickly and at a time to suit you.

Your Pharmacist will take your medical history, ask about your symptoms and any current medication you might be taking. Following the consultation, the pharmacist will offer you self-care advice and if appropriate, offer you an over-the-counter product. The pharmacist will make a record of the outcome of your consultation and send it to your GP.

If having given you advice/treatment, your pharmacist identifies you need further specialist help, your pharmacist will be able to refer you back to your GP or onto another health service for support.

Community Pharmacists have already successfully seen thousands of patients for a consultation for a minor condition, following a call to NHS 111 and through GPs around the country who have been piloting this service. Evidence from these pilots shows advice provided by Community Pharmacists results in the same outcome, as if the patient went to see their GP, or attended an emergency department.
